During this conflict, more than 400,000 gave their lives in service to their country. “TAPS” tells the stories of 43 from Big Stone County, Minnesota. The population of Big Stone County in 1940 was 10,000. Over 800 men and women left their homes to serve during WWII. The streets of small towns were left empty of men aged 19-25.

These are the stories of 43 of the men who did not return to the streets and country roads of their home. News of someone being killed laid heavily on the general population, because in a small town, everybody knew everybody, and, during the war, everyone was like family to everyone else.Big Stone County was in the war at the very beginning. Leo Mack was killed the first day when the Japanese bombed his airfield near Manila in the Philippines. Bill West flew into the middle of the bombing at Pearl Harbor with his Torpedo Squadron 6. Company L, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th “Red Bull” Division, our local National Guard unit, was among the first to land in Africa during Operation Torch. These are the stories of some of the men who did not return from battle.
