Tilford published a number of novels, dramas, and books of poetry. In 1916 she received the Southern Society of New York prize for the best book by a Southern writer, and in 1925 she was awarded the Belmont-Ward Fugitive Prize. Two novels published under the pseudonym Fielding Burke describe labor conditions in North Carolina mill towns. Her works include: Semiramis and Other Plays (1904), The Journey (1922) and Highland Annals (1925). She also coauthored The Flutter of the Goldleaf (1922) and Everychild (1922) with Frederick Peterson. Frederick Peterson (1859-1938) was an American neurologist and poet.

Peterson was at the forefront of psychoanalysis in the United States, publishing one of the first articles of Freud and Jungs theories of Free Association in 1909. In 1900 he was appointed president of the New York State Commission on Lunacy. In addition to his numerous medical writings, Peterson was an accomplished poet publishing Poems and Swedish Translations in 1883, and In the Shade of the Ygdrasil in 1893.
